This is so scary, and so bigoted.

Authorities in Orlando, Florida have identified the shooter in last night’s horrific Pulse nightclub shooting that left at least 50 people dead and 53 more wounded, the deadliest shooting in American history.

The shooter is apparently Omar Saddiqui Mateen, an American-born man of Afghan descent, who was from Port St. Lucie, Florida but was in Orlando to commit the crime.

According to Mateen’s father, who spoke to the media on Sunday morning, the shooter apparently witnessed two men kissing in downtown Miami recently, and he became ‘very upset’ at the sight of it.

From there, the father alleges, the attack in Orlando has ‘nothing to do with religion’ and instead, at least according to Mateen’s dad, may point to a hate crime.

The father said:

“We’re apologizing for the whole incident. We weren’t aware of any action he is taking. We are in shock like the whole country.”

For what it’s worth, reports are coming out that Mateen was investigated by the FBI at least once in the past for alleged ties to alleged terrorist activities, but those investigations were apparently closed.

Regardless of motive, it doesn’t change one thing: this is the worst mass shooting in American history, and something needs to change.

Our thoughts are with everyone who has lost a loved one in this tragic, awful incident.
