After the worst shooting in U.S. history occurred at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando over the weekend, many are blaming easy access to guns for the reason ISIS-sympathizer Omar Mateen fatally shot 50 people.
Unsurprisingly, some critics think that not only is guns NOT the problem behind these shootings — but can also be the solution!
On Sunday, gay gun rights group Pink Pistols urged the LGBT community to arm themselves in the wake of the Orlando terrorist attack.
Gwendolyn Patton, a representative for the organization, warned citizens to avoid a reaction to blame firearms for the tragic shooting.
She said in a statement:
“At such a time of tragedy, let us not reach for the low-hanging fruit of blaming the killer’s guns. Let us stay focused on the fact that someone hated gay people so much they were ready to kill or injure so many. A human being did this. The human being’s tools are unimportant when compared to the bleakness of that person’s soul.”
According to Pink Pistols — which boasts the motto “Armed gays don’t get bashed” — stricter gun control would only make things worse for citizens, continuing:
“It is difficult, if not impossible, to foresee such an event. But if they cannot be prevented, then they must be stopped as fast as someone tries to start them…It’s sad that we must consider such things, but when there are persons out there who mean us harm, we must find ways to protect ourselves within the law.”
Hmmm… wouldn’t a better option be changing the law to better protect the people from crazy people getting guns? Or at least make it way, WAY harder?
Even though Omar was probed twice by the FBI over terrorist ties, the 29-year-old was still able to legally purchase an assault rifle before massacring 50 people.
Call us crazy, but we think putting a federal ban on assault rifles would do a lot more to keep people safe over giving more assault rifles to people.
