When will this senseless violence end?

A 16-year-old girl was killed after a shooting occurred during a vigil in downtown Oakland Tuesday afternoon.

According to reports, three other people suffered gunshot wounds. The victims, described as men and women from their mid-teens to early 20s, were all listed in stable condition following the shooting.

The incident happened near a theater that was hosting a vigil for two teens who drowned in the Woodwind Reservoir over Memorial Day weekend.

Oakland Police Lt. Carlos Gonzalez said witnesses reported seeing two gunmen open fire along half of a city block.

While it’s unknown whether the shooting was related to the vigil, another witness said the vigil attendees were caught in a crossfire.

Mason Stone, another witness, told the San Francisco Chronicle he was walking a block away when he heard gunshots, adding:

“And then basically there were people running every which way.”

So sad. And coming on the heels of the worst mass shooting in American history, we’re devastated as yet another life is lost to gun violence.

Our hearts go out to the victim’s family at this tragic time.
