Spongebob Squarepants has been a staple in children’s television for more than 15 years — and now, all your fave characters are ditching the Ocean and heading to the Broadway stage!
The pre-Broadway tryout of The SpongeBob Musical is currently in previews at the Oriental Theatre in Chicago, and according to the first production photos, the Bikini Bottom gang is looking a LOT different than we’re used to!
Broadway in Chicago just released the first official photos of the musical adaptation, featuring Danny Skinner as Patrick, Lilli Cooper as Sandy, Gavin Lee as Squidward, and Ethan Slater as the titular sponge.
Though the first thing fans will notice upon looking at the photos is the lack of sponges, starfish, squids, and squirrels and instead find human depictions of their favorite undersea characters.
Director and co-creator Tina Laundau said she’s “not interested in putting on a theme-park show,” recently telling Time Out:
“No ├óΓé¼╦£SpongeBob on Ice,’ no characters in big prosthetics and no dumbing material down.”
Translation: this is NOT your child’s musical! LOLz!
When she pitched the stage adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon cartoon, Laundau wanted to make sure the actors would look like normal people and not their animated counterparts, adding:
“We’re not being literal with them. We’re embodying them in essence and physicality.”
As for the plot, the musical follows the residents of Bikini Bottom undergoing a city-wide panic when a volcano is expected to erupt. Sounds like fun!
Do YOU think The SpongeBob Musical will be a hit with a human Spongebob?
Ch-ch-check out the photos (above)!
