If you didn’t hear, Zoe Saldana got quite a bit of heat a couple of months ago for her last flick Nina — a biopic about jazz musician and classical pianist Nina Simone.

After some celebs like Queen Latifah and Paula Patton came to the Avatar actress’ defense, she’s finally speaking up and defending herself!

In an interview with Allure, Saldana talked a bit about the criticism she faced for playing the legendary soul singer addressing her race — as well as critics who hated scenes in which the 38-year-old wore skin darkening makeup and facial prosthetics.

Zoe responded to all the hate by saying:

“There’s no one way to be black. I’m black the way I know how to be. You have no idea who I am. I am black. I’m raising black men. Don’t you ever think you can look at me and address me with such disdain.”

The mother of two went on to say:

“The fact that we’re talking about her, that Nina Simone is trending? We f*cking won. For so many years, nobody knew who the f*ck she was. She is essential to our American history. As a woman first, and only then as everything else.”

As for those critics calling her out for the makeup and prosthetics, well the actress has a solution for anyone that wants to throw shade her way:

“I never saw her as unattractive. Nina looks like half my family. But if you think the [prosthetic] nose I wore was unattractive, then maybe you need to ask yourself, ‘What do you consider beautiful?’ Do you consider a thinner nose beautiful, so the wider you get, the more insulted you become?”

You tell em, Zoe!

Overall, the brunette beauty is EXTREMELY proud of her film and even welcomes other efforts to tell a similar story saying:

“Let it be the first movie. If you think you can do it better, then by all means. Let ours be version number one of 10 stories in the next 10 years about the f*cking iconic person that was Nina Simone.”

Though everyone is certainly entitled to their own opinion, we’re glad that Miz Saldana is firing back and standing up for herself and her decisions! It’s clear she was very passionate about the project.

What do you think of the whole casting controversy?!
