World’s Worst Dad Put Baby In Fridge To Try To Cure Fatal Heatstroke — After Leaving Her In The Car

This is SO terrible — and so preventable.

An unemployed high school teacher in Melissa, Texas has been arrested after allegedly leaving his six-month-old daughter in a hot car on Tuesday morning, going inside to take a nap and in the process, causing her death.

The man, Michael Thedford, dropped his two older kids (ages 3 and 5) off at daycare at around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday morning with the six-month-old in the car, and he returned home to take a nap.

At 1:00 p.m. when he awoke, he realized he had left the baby girl in the car by accident, and rushed outside to get her.

Temperatures had climbed well over 90 degrees by that point, and four hours in the car had rendered the baby “hot as a brick” and suffering from heatstroke.

Panicking, Thedford took her into the house and placed her in the refrigerator to try to cool her down, only to find her unresponsive.

He called 911 and started performing CPR, but it was too late — when deputies arrived, they pronounced the child dead on the scene.

The baby’s grandfather, Stan Thedford, spoke to the media about the horrifying incident, claiming Michael is a good father and informing the media the baby girl’s name was Fern:

“Every year at this time it happens to people from all walks of life. It’s something we should all be more aware of. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and concerns, we just need time for our grieving, and to help family get through it.”

And Thedford’s former boss at the school district where he worked last year, Bill Hemby, added his heartbreak over the terrible, tragic situation:

“Michael is rocket-science smart. He did a great job for us while he was here. We all had an understanding of how much he loved his children. We’re all in mourning, just like he is.”

That all may be true, but it’s still an incredible moment of negligence to leave a baby inside a car like that for four hours.

Predictably, Thedford has been arrested, and on Tuesday, he was charged with manslaughter.

Not so predictably, the man was released from jail after posting a $20,000 bond — and while Child Protective Services is investigating the family, they have not taken the other two children away from Thedford.

All around, just an awful, awful situation.

RIP Fern.
