So is this one bigger and better?
Well, it’s certainly bigger, as it was split up into multiple performances throughout the night. And it all started (above) with the Legendary Roots Crew, along with Erykah Badu and Bilal.
Erykah was subdued and surprisingly forgettable doing The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker… Bilal, on the other hand, really brought the spirit of the Purple One to the stage with his performance of The Beautiful Ones.
Next up, Tori Kelly joined Stevie Wonder — who interestingly enough was also in Her Madgesty’s BBMAs tribute — for a performance of Take Me With U.
It was just OK… but then Jennifer Hudson took the stage and showed everyone how paying tribute is DONE.
Ch-ch-check out all the AH-Mazing performers honoring the late artist starting with the Roots with Erykah and Bilal (below)!
The American Idol alum threw her entire soul into a performance of Purple Rain. She didn’t stop singing even as she walked right off the stage!
A bit later, Maxwell shifted his performance into a version of Nothing Compares 2 U, in which he changed multiple lyrics to refer directly to the late idol, including:
“It’s been 7 hours and 66 days since you took your music away.”
Then Janelle Monae brought the party like it was 1999 with an electrified medley of Delirious, Kiss, Pop Life, and I Would Die 4 U!
It was FINALLY the energy we’ve been waiting for, complete with choreo and costume changes! Yass!
Next, Prince’s ex Sheila E. came on to perform a medley of hits including Let’s Work, U Got The Look, A Love Bizarre, The Glamorous Life, America, and Baby I’m A Star.
If you’re out of breath reading that, imagine how she feels!
