As you may have heard by now, last Friday Texas mother Christy Sheats called a family meeting and once gathered pulled out a gun and shot and killed their two daughters, Taylor (22) and Madison (17).
While we already knew Taylor had shared her fears of her mother’s mental state with her friend, we now have a better idea about Christy’s motivation and history.
It was believed previously she simply didn’t have the chance to finish the murder spree by killing her husband, Jason Sheats, but new information has led police to believe he was spared on purpose.
Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy E. Nehls called a news conference on Wednesday to talk a bit about new info regarding the shootings saying that Christy had “ample time and opportunity” to kill Jason “but chose not to.” Repeating what Mr. Sheats had told him, Nehls continued saying:
“He felt Christy wanted him to suffer.”
The man of the family apparently thought that when his wife called the family meeting, she was going to tell their daughters they were getting a divorce! Woof.
The sheriff continued:
“Mr. Sheats stated Christy knew how much he loved Taylor and Madison and how much they loved him. By killing his children Mr. Sheats will have to live the rest of his life with this horrible memory.”
The father of two had also told authorities that his wife suffered from depression, for which she took several prescription medications and was seeing a therapist. In fact, she had even been admitted to a private mental health institution three times in the past few years for attempting suicide.
Apparently, the 42-year-old mom’s “downward spiral” all started in 2012 after the death of her grandfather, from whom she received the gun. Then things got even worse when her mother died two months later.
Sheriff Nehls went on to discuss the attack saying that Taylor and Madison were both shot in their home with the eldest child being targeted first. Taylor was shot through the back and Madison was hit in the neck. Though Jason was able to get them outside eventually, his daughters collapsed in the street with Taylor dying shortly after and his youngest passing away at a hospital.
Though the mourning father didn’t show up at the new conference, he gave the sheriff’s office permission to tell his story as Troy revealed:
“We look at him as a victim. This is something he is going to have to live with for the rest of his life. She accomplished what she set out to do, which is to make him suffer.”
We can’t begin to understand what Jason is going through, but our hearts go out to him and all those affected by this terrible event.
