The ruler of Shondaland has spoken!
After Jesse Williams was honored with the Humanitarian Award at this year’s BET Awards, the actor received mostly praise for his powerful speech on the Black Lives Matter movement and racial issues in America.
Though Williams’ empowering speech was all about promoting “equal and justice in our country,” some viewers (with selective hearing, we assume) found the speech to be “racist.”
These critics were so offended, they created a change.org petition to fire the actor from Grey’s Anatomy in hopes of “condemning his negative attitude.” How diabolical!
Thankfully, Shonda Rhimes stepped in to handle this mess for us and remind the critics who’s REALLY in charge of ABC‘s Thursday night lineup!
On Monday, the Grey’s Anatomy creator responded to the petitions on Twitter, writing:
Um, people? Boo don’t need a petition. #shondalandrules

Yesssss, girl! Tell those trolls to fade back!
Williams also responded (though obliquely) to the drama over the weekend, sharing on Twitter:
Do not promote empty people & their tantrums. Pure clickbait to gain followers, attention & money, for themselves, not you. Never you.

As it usually works, this ridiculous petition will disappear — and we’ll have yet another season of the hunky Williams to look forward to when Grey’s Anatomy returns!
