On Thursday, Jay Z released a new single called Spiritual, exclusive to his streaming site Tidal — though you can get your first listen (below).
This is the first bit of music since Jay’s 2013 hit album Magna Carta….Holy Grail.
The hitmaker revealed in a statement that he’s been working on the track for over a year — not long after the 2014 death of Michael Brown:
“I made this song a year or so ago, I never got to finish it. Punch (TDE) told me I should drop it when Mike Brown died, sadly I told him, ‘this issue will always be relevant.’ I’m hurt that I knew his death wouldn’t be the last…….
I’m saddened and disappointed in THIS America – we should be further along. WE ARE NOT.”
What a poignant sentiment. He continued:
“I trust in God and know everything that happens is for our greatest good, but man…..it’s tough right now. Blessings to all the families that have lost loved ones to police brutality. -j.”
However, Spiritual‘s release unfortunately comes right as five police officers were killed by snipers during a Black Lives Matter protest.
Jay isn’t the only member of his family who recently paid tribute to Alton and Philando as his wife Beyonce honored the slain men during her Formation World Tour stop in Glasgow, Scotland. Tissues, anyone?
Be sure to listen to Jay Z’s new song for yourself (below).
P.S. The single is available on Tidal for subscribers and non subscribers too.
