She’s seen as something like the Pakistani version of Kim Kardashian West, and now she’s dead — at the hands of her very own brother.
Qandeel Baloch (pictured above), a major social media and entertainment personality in her home country of Pakistan was found dead by police on Saturday.
Now, in just 24 hours’ time, her death is sweeping the world as a horrific example of what’s being termed an honor killing in the name of religion.
Baloch’s brother, Waseem Azeem, spoke at a police press conference on Saturday after being arrested under suspicion of the crime where he admitted in no uncertain terms that he killed his sister for violating his family’s very conservative social norms.
“Yes, of course I strangled her. She was on the ground floor while our parents were asleep on the roof top. It was around 10:45 p.m. when I gave her a tablet … and then I killed her.”
Azeem’s anger apparently stems from a moment when Baloch posed for pictures with a prominent Muslim cleric named Mufti Abdul Qavi, leaving Azeem angry at what he termed as disrespect for his religion.
“After the videos with Mufti Abdul Qavi had gone viral on social media, I planned to murder her and was only waiting for the best moment. Girls are born only to stay at home and to bring honor to the family by following family traditions but Qandeel had never done that. Murdering her was better than committing suicide so I went with the former plan.”
That is horrifying and senseless. All we can do is pray for Baloch after this awful murder.
