US Soccer isn’t messing around when it comes to Hope Solo‘s unsportsmanlike conduct.
During the 2016 Olympics, the US Women’s team lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals, when the 1-1 game went to penalty kicks.
After the Team USA‘s upset, the team’s keeper called the Swedish sports stars “a bunch of cowards,” and completely bashed their gameplay.
But now, it looks like the scandalized goalie is facing the consequences of her hurtful words.
On Wednesday, US Soccer announced they will be suspending the 35-year-old for six months — effective immediately — because her controversial comments were “counter to the organization’s principles.”
US Soccer President Sunil Gulati said in a statement:
“The comments by Hope Solo after the match against Sweden during the 2016 Olympics were unacceptable and do not meet the standard of conduct we require from our National Team players. Beyond the athletic arena, and beyond the results, the Olympics celebrate and represent the ideals of fair play and respect. We expect all of our representatives to honor those principles, with no exceptions.”
And if you’re wondering why the athlete will be benched for half a year for being a sore loser, Sunil explained that previous problems with the Washington native factored in to the organization’s decision:
“Taking into consideration the past incidents involving Hope, as well as the private conversations we’ve had requiring her to conduct herself in a manner befitting a U.S. National Team member, U.S. Soccer determined this is the appropriate disciplinary action.”
This punishment means Miz Solo won’t be able to qualify for the US Women’s National Team until February.
What do U think of the suspension, Perezcious readers?!
