Usually Fridays are pretty happy as most people get ready for a fun or relaxing weekend, so if you want to avoid becoming a blubbering mess, look away!
A man named Andrew Bernhard took to Reddit to share a picture (above) a couple days ago along with an adorable and absolutely heartbreaking story about taking his pet cat, also named Andrew, to the vet.
The picture goes from adorable to heartbreaking when you realize the cat sweetly holding its owners’ hands is going to the vet to be put down as the post was captioned:
“He held our hands on his last trip to the vet. Little Andrew was much stronger than his mom and I”
Human Andrew posted in the comments, saying:
“He was 15 and a half and loved everyone, but just got old and sick over the last year. He purred everyday of his life and when he lost that, I knew it was time. Always sad to lose a friend. Sorry for everybody else’s losses as well.”
“Yep. I’m a big dumb idiot. Even though the cat saw me through high school, undergraduate, medical school, and residency graduations, I just never could figure out what he was thinking. So now that my cat’s story has touched hundreds of thousands of people, I’ll go back to doing surgery and you can go back to trolling the Internet. Strong work.”
After coming across the post, PEOPLE reached out to the saddened owner who told them a bit more:
“Andrew was my little boy. He was a great guy. He was always happy to see everybody, always won fights with the dog and just wanted you around all the time. He just finally got too weak to keep up.”
Though the little furball isn’t around anymore, Bernhard seems pretty pleased his best friend’s memory will live on:
“I’m just so happy his story has continued. He brought such happiness to me and I hope he continues to make others feel good about their own pets.”
