This is absolutely senseless.
Dwyane Wade‘s cousin Nykea Aldridge was shot and killed on Friday afternoon as she was pushing a stroller down a Chicago street and just so happened to get caught up in crossfire between two groups of men.
Aldridge, who was headed to an elementary school to register her children for the new school year, was shot in the head and arm in the incident, and died roughly 45 minutes later at a Chicago hospital. She was 32 years old.
Jolinda Wade, her aunt — and the NBA star’s mother — told reporters:
“She wasn’t bothering nobody. She was just going to register her kids at school.”
According to Chicago police, two suspects are already in custody, and Aldridge was not the target of the shooting — just an innocent victim caught up in a senseless altercation.
Thankfully, the child in the stroller was not injured.
Wade tweeted his condolences — and anger — over the incident on Friday (below):
Wade, who had played with the Miami Heat for 13 years, just recently signed a contract with his hometown Chicago Bulls this offseason.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire family after the tragic, awful loss of Ms. Aldridge.
