Wow, Elizabeth Vargas went through A LOT.
In a snippet from Vargas’ new memoir Between Breaths: A Memoir of Panic and Addiction, the 20/20 star opened up on her decades long battle with alcoholism.
While there are plenty of disturbing memories in the brave book, the Daily Mail obtained a particularly scary passage depicting a moment when Vargas got blacked out in a public park following a late-MORNING interview for 20/20 in July of 2012.
According to the mother of two, that morning she downed a bottle of wine to compensate for a terrible hangover. Upon leaving the office, she somehow ended up in a park incoherent and with “two sketchy guys” circling her.
Luckily for the news anchor, a good samaritan saved her from the terrible situation. Apparently the journalist managed to give her address to the concerned civilian before passing out.
In a follow-up interview with People Magazine, the 54-year-old went on to describe the aftermath in heartbreaking detail:
“It was terrifying once I started to hear the particulars. will never know who that person was that saved my life. I spent a lot of time and energy after that trying to pry a memory out around that padlocked door, and I can’t. I was sure that in a few weeks ├óΓé¼┬ª I could get something out. No. I don’t remember anything.”
Damn. We can’t begin to imagine how terrifying it must be to have your memory wiped out.
Now that Elizabeth is sober, she hopes her story will motivate others to seek help:
“Addiction is a hopeless, dark place. I have great empathy for people trapped there. And I hope my story can help someone else.”
Well, we hope E.V.’s hopes come true — alcoholism is a devastating disease for MANY people.
