UPDATE 6:09 P.M. ET: In a Facebook post on Friday afternoon, owner Mike Bonanno announced the store would be closed indefinitely and would remain “silent” throughout the weekend “to avoid any further distractions from a day of recognition and remembrance for the victims and their families.”
A Texas mattress shop is under fire for airing a tasteless commercial to promote a “Twin Towers” sale on 9/11.
First, the sale itself is bad enough taste — especially considering how silly the employees of Miracle Mattress in San Antonio are acting about it.
But then the clip ends with two employees screaming as they crash into “Twin Towers” made up of mattresses!
After the comedic reenactment, store manager Cherise Bonanno cries out “oh my god!” before turning to the camera to say:
“We will never forget.”
Viewers who endured watching this crass commercial will never forget either — as the company’s Facebook page was flooded with negative comments, with many calling for a boycott of the story.
After removing the ad, store owner Mike Bonanno issued an apology on Thursday, writing:
“I say this unequivocally, with sincere regret: the video is tasteless and an affront to the men and women who lost their lives on 9/11. Furthermore, it disrespects the families who lost their loved ones and continue to struggle with the pain of this tragedy every day of their lives├óΓé¼┬ª I am disgusted such a video would have been conceived as a promotional tool and even more incensed it was created and posted on any social media site that represents Miracle Mattress.”
The owner said the company would “determine an appropriate response to express our regret and support for the 9/11 victims and their families.”
Next time the marketing geniuses at Miracle Mattress think they have a great idea for an ad, we hope they sleep on it a little more.
