A popular Brazilian actor has died after drowning in a river where he had shot scenes for his hit soap opera.
Domingos Montagner went for a swim on Thursday afternoon in the S├â┬úo Francisco River in a small town called Caninde in the northeastern Brazilian state of Sergipe — but during his outing, he was carried away by a strong current.
This is all according to actress Camila Pitanga, who was apparently with the 54-year-old when the incident occurred. Luckily, she was able to swim to a rock and cling to it, eventually pulling herself out of the water before getting help for Montagner.
Unfortunately, it was too late for Domingos, as by the time authorities arrived he had been swept down stream. It wasn’t until a few hours later that his body was found lodged between two rocks, about 60 feet below the surface of the water.
The actor was famous for his starring role in Velho Chico, a Brazilian soap produced by Globo TV, which had been shooting in the area recently.
Antonio Francisco Filho, a local government official, spoke to the media about Domingos’ sudden passing, saying:
“They thought the area they picked to swim was safe, but in fact it’s one of the most dangerous places to bathe. This is a part of the river in Caninde that isn’t common for bathers.”
To make an already sad story even worse… we’re hearing Domingos leaves behind a wife and three children.
Our thoughts are with his friends and family at this unimaginably difficult time.
Rest in peace, Domingos.
