Julie Chen learned a valuable lesson from her family’s dark history.

On Thursday’s The Talk, the 46-year-old shared the terrible story of her great-grandmother and aunt being kidnapped and held for ransom.

Chen explained that since her grandfather was a wealthy businessman, it drew a “target on his back” years ago.

Apparently, a group of bandits once kidnapped his elderly mother and one of his teenage daughters, threatening to kill them if a large ransom wasn’t paid.

Julie’s grandfather managed to gather up all the money and gave it to his nephew to deliver for the exchange… except the family member double-crossed him and “disappeared into the night with the money.”

Unfortunately, it was that very stab in the back that led to the murder of the CBS host’s great-grandmother:

“As it turned out, because of that, the bandits murdered my great-grandmother and my mom’s sister in the end ended up marrying one of the bandits who murdered her grandmother.”

Despite going through such a tragedy, Chen’s grandfather “didn’t blame the bandits” for his loss, but instead “blamed the fact that the bandits didn’t have an education.”

That’s why the businessman decided to take the path of light and ended up building a school in his poverty-stricken hometown in hopes that future generations wouldn’t be led to a life of crime — and it worked!

Now there’s a silver lining!!
