The Miami Marlins are still trying to process the tragic death of star pitcher José Fernández, who was killed in a boat crash over the weekend.
Now, more details have surfaced about the events surrounding the 24-year-old’s ill-fated night.
According to TMZ Sports, the 24-year-old was at a popular Miami waterfront party spot at least 90 minutes before the crash.
Fernandez and at least one other person who died in the accident were at American Social Bar & Kitchen around 2 a.m. on Sunday morning.
Though the restaurant wouldn’t divulge any details on if alcohol was served to the MLB star or his friends, a rep confirmed that “Jos├â┬⌐ Fernandez was a guest at American Social.”
The popular restaurant, which has a dock for boaters to anchor their vessels, is located only a short distance from the site of the crash.
Investigators believe the boat, which was discovered by the coast guard at 3:30 a.m., was traveling at full speed when it collided into a jetty — man made structures that protrude out of the water to deflect currents.
Due to lack of liquor bottles or beer cans, officials say it does not appear that alcohol was a factor in the crash, but toxicology reports are still pending.
