Oh, sweetie darling.
Joanna Lumley had an absolutely fabulous 2016 thanks to her reprisal of Patsy Stone for Ab Fab: The Movie… but we think the iconic character may be leaking into her real life just a bit.
That’s because despite portraying one of the most famous females in British television history, Joanna doesn’t seem to be a huge advocate for women’s rights.
In fact, she actively spoke out against feminists who take issue with cat calling — or wolf whistling, for you Brits — during a recent interview with The Daily Mirror!
While speaking to the tabloid on Tuesday, Joanna admitted that she actually considers the sexist act a compliment, saying:
“How can wolf whistling be offensive to women? It’s a compliment! They’re saying ‘Cor you look all right, darlin’.’ What’s wrong with that?”
Clearly something got lost in translation there, right??
Unfortunately… no. When given the opportunity to clarify her original statement, the former model doubled down on the position, adding:
“We were tougher in those days. You knew someone would whistle in the street and you weren’t insulted. We have become more sensitive flowers nowadays, people are very offended by everything. When I was modelling photographers were much ruder, they’d say, ‘You look frightful, what’s the matter with you? You look podgy, you look fat as a pig.’ It was good-natured banter, you kind of got on with it, it didn’t upset you.”
We think we get what she’s trying to say. She had to deal with much worse in her day.
But just because things have gotten better doesn’t mean they’re acceptable, Jo!
Then again, at least casual sexism is a step up from the blatant racism attached to the last Ab Fab controversy…
Do U think cat calling/wolf whistling is ever not offensive??
