A woman fell to her death while trying to escape from the apartment of an Australian man she met through Tinder.
According to AP, New Zealand tourist Warriena Wright was so afraid of Gable Tostee that she fell 14 floors while trying to flee from his apartment balcony in the early hours of August 8, 2014.
On Monday, the 30-year-old pleaded not guilty in the Queensland State Supreme Court to the murder of the 26-year-old.
Prosecuting attorney Glen Cash says Tostee, who met Wright for the first time on the night she died, did not throw the victim to her death, but intimidated and threatened her to where she felt climbing down the balcony was her only option.
The court also heard an audio recording on Tostee’s phone that captured an altercation between the pair right before the fall.
Cash alleged that Tostee got angry after Wright threw decorative rocks at him and hit him with a telescope. He then claimed Tostee choked and restrained the woman before locking her out on the balcony.
The man is heard to say:
“You’re lucky I haven’t chucked you off my balcony├óΓé¼┬ª If you try to pull anything, I’ll knock you out.”
The jury was also told a neighbor overheard Wright crying “No, no, no, please let me go home,” before witnessing her plummeting from the balcony moments later.
As for the defense, Tostee’s lawyer claims Wright was increasingly erratic and aggressive toward Tostee after a night of drinking.
If convicted, he faces a potential life sentence.
