After news of the PayPal co-founder’s large donation came out, many questioned whether Facebook should reevaluate Thiel’s status as a board member — but according to the big man in charge, the Trump supporter isn’t going anywhere.
On Tuesday, Zuckerberg commented on the controversy in an internal memo to Facebook employees, in which he chalked up the board member’s support of the candidate as part of the company’s “diversity.”
In a leaked screenshot of the CEO’s post, which the social media giant confirmed to CBS News was authentic, he wrote:
“We can’t create a culture that says it cares about diversity and then excludes almost half of the country because they back a political candidate. There are many reasons a person might support Trump that do not involve racism, sexism, xenophobia or accepting sexual assault.”
Maybe not, but it sure seems that way by this point, doesn’t it?
Z-berg gave a few reasons why a billionaire like Thiel would support the GOP nominee, like being one of the few people who would benefit from his proposed tax plan. He added:
“It may be because they believe strongly in smaller government, a different tax policy, health care system, religious issues, gun rights or any other issue where he disagrees with Hillary.”
The CEO went on to say differing viewpoints is what makes the company so special and diverse — and just like an annoying uncle who won’t stop posting his outdated opinions, Thiel’s support is something we need to just accept and/or ignore.
