American Action Hero Steven Seagal Has Been Granted Russian Citizenship By Vladimir Putin — HUH?!

With the presidential race closer than ever, some celebrities have been vocal about moving to Canada if Donald Trump wins the election.

Steven Seagal seems to be preparing for a worst case scenario as well, but will apparently be heading the other way.

On Thursday, it was announced that the Under Siege actor was granted Russian citizenship by President Vladimir Putin himself!

According to Russian press, Putin signed the order after Seagal repeatedly asked for citizenship.

The self-identified Republican’s “warm feelings towards Russia” don’t come as much of a surprise. Not only has he spent most of October there, but he also defended Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Like Trump, the 64-year-old actor is chummy with the Russian leader, having accompanied Putin to martial-arts events in the past and describing him as “one of the greatest world leaders” — unlike Barack Obama, who the actor called for an impeachment of back in 2014.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Seagal’s celeb status also didn’t hurt in the decision making process, noting in a press conference:

“[Seagal] has been insistent for a long time in asking to be granted Russian citizenship… At the same time, he is a rather well-known actor, which became the reason for granting him Russian Federation citizenship.”

Seagal has yet to confirm if he’ll accept the citizenship, but it’s good to know that he has a place to escape to if when Hillary Clinton wins the presidency!
