Johnny Depp Recalls Daughter Lily-Rose’s Scary 2007 Illness & ‘Not Knowing If She Was Going To Make It’

Johnny Depp and Lily Rose Depp

There was a time when Johnny Depp didn’t know if his daughter Lily-Rose Depp was going to make it.

As you may know, the up-and-coming actress/model suffered kidney failure after a battle with E. coli infection when she was just seven years old. So scary.

While accepting the inaugural Rhonda’s Kiss Healing and Hope Award for his efforts to support cancer patients on Thursday night, the 53-year-old remembered the “melting” feeling he experienced all those years ago:

“To the parents in the room who I was speaking about earlier, who I have seen melting and their own form of courage. I was one of those parents, for weeks, when my daughter was ill.”

At the time, Johnny and the now-17-year-old’s mother Vanessa Paradis kept a constant vigil at their baby girl’s bedside.

The actor continued:

“I lived in the [London] hospital for three weeks with my girl and my kid, not knowing if she was going to make it or not. Parents, please note that you have my utter respect. Please note that you have all my respect, and you have my promise to continue to fight, this noble fight right alongside you at any time. And, we’ll just never give up. It’s as simple as that.”

The Black Mass star also took the time to honor the medical staff who helped treat his late mother Betty Sue Palmer:

“She was a hellcat. She was mean, but she was funny. The amount of care and love she received from every member of the staff and the brilliant and dedicated specialists who tirelessly gave of themselves far beyond the call of duty, I am truly humbled by this kindness. Their kindness and your infinite knowledge, doctors and specialists. My mom and her family would have been very much lost in the darkness without these people. We’ll always owe them a deep debt of gratitude that is virtually impossible to repay.”

People reports that despite the musician’s emotional speech, he seemed in good spirits and was all smiles as he spoke to the audience.

What a scary time! But we’re so happy Miz Lily-Rose is all grown up and healthy these days!
