Alec Baldwin may’ve poked fun at Donald Trump with his Saturday Night Live impression, but that doesn’t mean he hates the guy.

On Tuesday, the 30 Rock alum opened up about portraying the Celebrity Apprentice star during his appearance on WNYC‘s The Brian Lehrer Show.

While noting most impressions come from a place of appreciation, the 58-year-old explained:

“I don’t hate Trump, but he’s not somebody I admire, so it was more difficult.”

Oh snap!

In regards to how he perfected his impression of the Trumpster, Baldwin revealed that his process included watching a lot of footage of Donald and practicing. Still, at first, Alec wasn’t entirely confident he should be playing the now President-elect, adding:

“When [Lorne Michaels] asked me, I said no. I said, well I don’t want to do that, I don’t think I can do that. I mean, he had Taran Killam and Darrell Hammond, he had a couple of people who were in his compound there, who could do it I thought better than me. And I thought, I don’t want to do it, I don’t think I can. But you get lucky and I also think that people were ready to take in that version of him, which is so aggressive.”

Like Tina Fey with Sarah Palin, it wasn’t so hard to slip into character as the variety show didn’t really have to rewrite any lines. He continued:

“Of course, he is the head writer of his own comedy routine, everything he just supplied to us.”

Although Donald rarely had anything nice to say about his opponent Hillary Clinton, his SNL lookalike had only nice things to say about Kate McKinnon (who famously portrayed the former Secretary of State). On working with Miz McKinnon, the A-lister shared:

“One of my greatest joys is that I got to do it with Kate. She is just this staggering, talented woman. And she’s smart, because she mixes the sweet and the sour in there. There’s Hillary, the very driven and very, very ambitious woman and there’s Hillary, who really made her into this sweet, kind of cartoon character and lovable in a way and that’s her gift.”

Now, just because Alec doesn’t “hate” Donald, that doesn’t mean he’s a fan either as he voiced his disappointment in the election results on Twitter (below)!!!

*Sigh*

It’s gonna be a rough four years, folks …
