The 44-year-old mother, who is homeless, had allegedly fled the area by the time police arrived on the scene. Responding officers found Kyles’ 14-year-old daughter, who allegedly smelled of gasoline.

The “visibly shaken” teen was crying as she told officials her head and hand hurt from being assaulted. Kyles’ daughter alleged she was in her mother’s parked van hours earlier when her older sister started criticizing her for a bad grade she received on a school test.

Kyles reportedly berated the girl and struck her several times on her leg and hand with a tire iron and whipped her with a phone charger. Then, the mother retrieved a gas can from the van’s back seat and doused her daughter before flicking a lighter dangerously close to her.

The daughter claims she then fled the van and ran towards the nearest apartment building, screaming:

“Help me, she’s trying to set me on fire! She’s gonna kill me!”

Kyles allegedly ran after the girl, who was taken into the apartment building by concerned residents. After one witness confronted the mother about her daughter’s claims, Kyles allegedly threatened to set the witness and her apartment on fire, responding:

“It’s my daughter and I can do as I please!”

The girl was taken to a local hospital for treatment and is now in state custody.

Kyles told police the argument was funded by content she found on her daughter’s phone, and she denies whipping and pouring gasoline on the teen.

The mother pleaded not guilty to both offenses on Tuesday. She is being held on $150,000 bail.
