What an unthinkable tragedy.

On December 2, engaged couple Brett Greenhill and Meg Alexander were celebrating their joint bachelor/bachelorette party in Florida when something devastating happened — Brett became paralyzed after a swimming accident.

According to Meg, Greenhill was having a “blast” playing football on the beach with some friends before he made a fateful decision which would change the course of his life.

After Brett dove into the ocean to cool off from the game, one of Alexander’s friends noted there was something strange going on with her fianc├â┬⌐.

Meg recalled to People Magazine:

“Brett went into the water and all of a sudden my friend Kelsey says, ├óΓé¼╦£Why is Brett doing that? Why is he floating like that?’ I was like, ├óΓé¼╦£I don’t know, he’s a goofball’ and she went to check on him.”

The bride-to-be’s friend Kelsey was a registered nurse who immediately knew something awful had occurred.

The RN explained:

“I grabbed him, flipped him over and he said, ├óΓé¼╦£Help me, Kel. I can’t move’. It went from an incredible weekend to devastating.”

After Greenhill was airlifted to a local hospital, doctors determined he was paralyzed from the neck down and that he has a 1% chance of mobility. The medical team theorizes the paralyzation occurred after the 39-year-old hit his head on a sandbar.

As of now, Brett is recuperating in the ICU while he regains his speech. Doctors are confident he’ll be able to speak again soon.

Elaborating on life after the accident, Meg revealed:

“I go through the alphabet and he’ll tell me what letter to stop on so I can write words out. The first thing he said to me was, ├óΓé¼╦£I love you’. ‘Please be patient with me’. He knows where he is and what happened. I can’t imagine what is going through his brain right now. He’s so smart and analytical.”

Once Brett is released, he’ll be transferred to a rehab facility fifteen minutes away from their Georgia area home.

The couple have put their wedding (originally planned for February 2017) on hold as they work through the obstacles:

“He’s the most determined person I know. If anyone can push through this, it’s Brett. Obviously, this situation is extremely trying. But together we can get through this. I know we can.”
