Tarek and Christina El Moussa are speaking out.
As you know, the famed Flip Or Flop couple unexpectedly announced their split on Monday — eight months after their initial separation following an incident involving a gun on May 23.
Speaking to People, the parents of Taylor, 6, and Brayden, 16 months, explained:
“We decided to separate while we reevaluated the next steps in our married life. We believed this was in the best interests of the children and the best way to determine a path forward.”
“The most difficult part of the decision to separate was the kids. We want the best for them, and we’re doing everything we can to ensure that.”
ICYMI, back in May, a “crying and shaking” Christina alerted authorities after Tarek fled their California home with a gun in his backpack following an argument.
After the 35-year-old reportedly took off into the Chino Hills State Park after hopping the fence of his family’s home, police cars and a helicopter were dispatched.
The reality star was ultimately spotted, and agreed to comply with police orders and turn in his weapon collection — which includes five firearms kept “unloaded and in a locked gun safe” — for 30 days.
Now, the couple maintains Tarek’s “intentions were misread”:
“Tarek was going on a hike and took a gun for protection from mountain lions, bobcats, coyotes and rattlesnakes.”
Hmm. Sounds fishy.
As far as reports suggesting Christina and Tarek have moved on to other relationships, the pair confirms:
“We have both dated other people following the separation, but neither of us is ready to announce anything in terms of another relationship.”
The duo — who has no official plans to file for divorce — also intend to continue working together professionally:
“We plan to continue our professional life together by being professional, by doing our jobs well, by being prepared and by working hard.”
We wish this family the best of luck during this difficult transition.
