Melanie C is not afraid to be candid about her eating disorder.
The former Spice Girls member opened up about her past struggles with food and body image for a powerful BBC Good Food essay. And although the British pop star is beloved for being a member of the ’90s girl group, it was her role as Sporty Spice which sparked her insecurities about her body. Whoa.
The Never Be The Same Again singer wrote:
“I joined the Spice Girls when I was 20 and it was an insane time. I developed an eating disorder. I was in the spotlight, being photographed constantly, and I started to become self conscious of my body image.”
Oof. While this isn’t the first time the 42-year-old has talked about battling an eating disorder, it’s still eye opening to read about her struggles. She continued:
“I was in denial for a long time but I always wanted to get better. I had talking therapies and holistic therapies, like acupuncture. Sport became really important to me too.”
It’s a little perfect that Sporty Spice found exercise therapeutic, right?
Thankfully, Mel now has a “healthy relationship with food.” The mother-of-one concluded:
“We’re so much more aware of nutrition nowadays. When I was a teenager, I didn’t know the difference between a protein and a carb. We need to get back to realizing that we are what we eat.”
We couldn’t be prouder of Melanie for opening up once again about her struggles — although we’re still kind of bitter she isn’t on board with the Spice Girls reunion tour. Sigh!
