These are truly the worst kinds of things to have to report.

Two different Major League Baseball players were killed in two separate car accidents in the Dominican Republic on Saturday, according to their respective teams and agents.

Yordano Ventura (shown above throwing a breaking ball to an opponent during his time in MLB), a very well-known, hard-throwing right-handed pitcher for the Kansas City Royals, lost his life in an accident in the town of Juan Adrian at some point late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. He was just 25 years old.

Then, Andy Marte, a former Major Leaguer who had spent the last two seasons playing professionally in the high-level professional Korean Baseball Organization, was killed in a separate car accident at approximately 3:00 a.m. local time in the town of Casa de Alto, according to authorities.

Marte was 33 years old.

Ventura will be very well-remembered by Royals fans for his incredibly hard fastball that could reach 100 miles per hour, and his fiery personality on the field — leading to exceptional results (he was 38-31 with a 3.89 earned run average in his career), as well as some on-field altercations with opponents.

Marte had been a seven-year veteran of the big leagues with the Atlanta Braves, Cleveland Indians, and Arizona Diamondbacks as an infielder before moving to Korea to continue his career the past two years.

Here’s Ventura from earlier in his career, honoring the memory of his good friend and another former big leaguer, Oscar Taveras, who was also killed in a car accident (below):

And here’s Marte’s agency group with their condolences for his loss, as well (below):

At the time of his death this morning, Marte had been playing winter league baseball for Las Aguilas Cibaenas in his native country, as well.

In a sad, weird twist of fate, it turns out that Marte’s final big league game (before heading to play in Korea) took place against… Yordano Ventura.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends, loved ones, and fans of both players, and the former teammates and organizations they leave behind.

Too soon, too sad. R.I.P.
