American Airlines has royally pissed off Jason Derulo!
On Wednesday, the Talk Dirty singer took to Instagram to SLAM the airline after he and his travel companions “experienced racial discrimination” at the hands of multiple AA employees. Oh no!
The hitmaker posted:
[email protected] I spent millions on your airline throughout the past ten years between myself and my entire staff but have still experienced racial discrimination today at miami airport!!! Called 15 police officers on me as if I’m a criminal! It’s not ok that when you find out who I am the gears change! Fuck that!! I want answers #conciergekey #conciergekeymember #thecaptainneedstoshowrespecttoo cause he could #cashmeoutsidehowboutdat #notypo #ifiwasanyoneelseiwouldhavebeenarrestedA photo posted by Jason (@jasonderulo) on Feb 8, 2017 at 3:41pm PST
During a candid chat with People, Derulo revealed he was checking in for his flight from Miami to Los Angeles when a dispute over checked baggage arose. Apparently, there was an issue about the timing of his group’s check-in, so one of the songwriter’s friends decided to take a later flight so they could fly with all the luggage.
While elite passengers normally get three free checked bags through American Airlines, the 19 pieces of luggage Jason’s friend tried to check resulted in a $4,000 bill. The Wiggle artist noted:
“We’d never paid for our bags because of our status├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥with all of our miles├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥so we’d never paid for bags. So $4,000 is obviously a huge sum. We were like, ├óΓé¼╦£No, we’re not paying that. We’ve got to turn the plane around.'”
Oof. It seems this decision to have the plane be brought back to the gate infuriated the captain as the aerial professional allegedly cursed out the 27-year-old and his companions as they deplaned. The Florida native continued:
“And that was really upsetting to me because I felt like he was trying to make it seem like we were delinquents, and he was kicking us off the plane, when it was us that asked to get off the plane. I was like, ‘Listen, sir, you’re not going to talk down to me; I’m not your son. Don’t talk to me in that tone of voice.'”
Oh snap! The airline has since issued the following statement on the matter:
“[Flight 275] returned to the gate prior to departure. A passenger elected to deplane in order to travel with their checked bags. The passenger has been rebooked with his checked bags on a later flight this evening.”
Huh. A pretty bland explanation, especially after what happened next to the industry vet.
Derulo claims that, as he and his friends exited the plane, they were greeted by 15 police officers and another foul mouthed AA employee. Clearly, Jason was done taking shit from the airline staff as he took out his phone and went live on Instagram to broadcast the drama.
“As you can imagine, I’m surrounded by 15 police officers, I’m not going to curse back because I know what’s going to happen. So I pick up my phone, and I go live on my Instagram…So I go live, and I start to hear whispers happening, and as soon as they find out who I am, everything changes. Every single person becomes somebody else, and all of a sudden, we’re not in trouble anymore.”
DAYUMMMMM. Nonetheless, Miami-Dade PD‘s police report paints a different picture as it states that an airline employee claimed the A-lister and his friends smelt of “marijuana” and were “getting aggressive” during the check-in process. Reportedly, Jason and his comrades refused to give the police AND the airline staffers their IDs while deplaning.
Regardless, Jason defends he just wants to be “treated with respect.” We guess we’ll just have to wait and see if we get more information from American Airlines on the incident.
