Madonna may be one of the world’s biggest pop stars, but even she wasn’t exempt from some “uncomfortable” questioning while she petitioned to adopt her twin daughters, Estere and Stelle, from Malawi. Hot damn!
According to the Associated Press, Judge Fiona Mwale made Madge jump through some hoops before she could bring the little girls home with her. On why she approved the Like A Prayer singer’s adoption paperwork, the judge explained:
“The petitioner is a professional performer and I guarded myself against the danger of her merely reciting a well-rehearsed speech by asking her some rather uncomfortable questions to which she gave very candid answers.”
Apparently, Mwale pressed the A-lister quite a bit about why she wanted to adopted two more children as she was already a mother to four other kiddos. Nonetheless, the 58-year-old’s answer was satisfactory as the legal expert noted:
“There is no doubt that the petitioner can offer the infants not only the best education money can buy, but also guidance with a high likelihood of ensuring that the two infants grow to be self-sufficient adults… [Madonna] is motivated by her desire to offer a home, love, protection and guidance to the infants.”
Awwwww. In regards to the past controversies caused by Madonna’s adopting David and Mercy James, who are also originally from Malawi, the judge defended:
“In determining her motives, I questioned the petitioner at length about the impact of her decision which could be construed as robbing Malawi of its most precious resource, its children.”
It probably helps that the Material Girl has a long history of doing charitable work in Malawi as she founded the Raising Malawi charity back in 2006. Now Madonna’s new girls will keep their birth names so they can maintain their Malawian identity. However, since Madonna is trying to keep them away from the limelight, we doubt we’ll get too much information about them in the near future.
Sigh. We’re wishing the tiny tots only the best as they embark on the next chapter of their life!
