Selena Gomez isn’t afraid to get real with her fans.
During Wednesday’s panel for her Netflix show, 13 Reasons Why, the Hands To Myself singer candidly revealed why she felt so connected to this project about teen suicide. Go on!
In regards to her own tough high school experience, the A-lister shared:
“I think that my [own] high school experience was amplified. I wouldn’t say it was worse, but it made it harder… Whether it was just kids or growing up in the biggest high school in the world, which was Disney Channel, it was also adults that had the audacity to kind of tell me how I should live my life…It was very confusing for me. I had no idea who I was going to be, what I’m still going to become.”
Fair, fair. Of course, the start of production for 13 Reason Why came right as Miz Gomez was starting her 90-day stint rehab, in order to deal with her own mental health issues. And while the former child star was initially passionate about executive producing the project, she’s since developed her own personal connection to the story.
The triple threat continued:
“To be frank with you, I actually was going through a really difficult time when they started production. I went away for 90 days, and I actually met a ton of kids in this place that were talking about issues that these characters are experiencing. Whether I like it or not, people have seen a lot of my mistakes and I had to use that as a good thing, because then they’re able to trust me. I want to be a part of this, because I think this is what they want, this is what they need.”
Still, despite being the most followed person on Instagram, Selly G struggles with the constant attention she gets thanks to social media. In fact, Taylor Swift‘s bestie “can’t stand” social networking! She noted:
“I can’t stand what they’re looking at and what they think is reality. There are 17-year-old’s that look older than me and that freaks me out. We’re just so disconnected from people now. Teens just really want [a connection].”
You can say that again!
Nonetheless, we’re so impressed with how Selena has taken in her own tough experience and turned it into something influential for her fans. Snaps!
