Casey Affleck is WELL aware people are pissed about his Oscar win.
As you may recall, Ben Affleck‘s brother took home the Best Actor statue on Sunday for his role in the independent film Manchester By The Sea. However, as it was throughout most of awards season, the 41-year-old’s big win was met with quite a bit of criticism due to his past sexual harassment lawsuit.
We mean, Brie Larson straight up REFUSED to clap for Casey as he gave his (totally awful) acceptance speech. So why exactly are people pissed at the brooding leading man? Well, back in 2010, Affleck was sued by two women he worked with on the movie I’m Still Here. Allegedly, the A-lister had inflicted numerous “uninvited and unwelcome sexual advances” onto the said victims.
Despite vehemently denying the allegations, the Good Will Hunting alum settled with the ladies out of court for an undisclosed amount. Doesn’t really scream “innocent,” right???
Well, it seems as though the Gone Baby Gone actor is now trying to paint himself as the victim, as he relayed on Tuesday during a chat with the Boston Globe:
“I believe that any kind of mistreatment of anyone for any reason is unacceptable and abhorrent, and everyone deserves to be treated with respect in the workplace and anywhere else.”
If that’s your mantra then what happened on the I’m Still Here set? Sadly, we doubt we’ll ever find out the specifics of what went down since both sides of the lawsuit aren’t allowed to comment on the matter. He added:
“There’s really nothing I can do about it. Other than live my life the way I know I live it and to speak to what my own values are and how I try to live by them all the time.”
*eye roll* For many critics, this situation further proves that the white patriarchal male can pretty much get away with anything. Sigh…
