Beauty And The Beast‘s Release Postponed In Malaysia Over That Gay Character Controversy!

Beauty and the Beast will be enchanting audiences worldwide this weekend — except for Malaysia, which has decided to postpone the film’s release to conduct an “internal review.”

The live-action Disney remake was set to open on Thursday in the Southeast Asian country, but has been put on hold over controversy sparked by the story’s portrayal of a gay character.

Earlier this month, it was reported that a theater banned screening the film because Josh Gad‘s LeFou had more than you’re average guy crush on Gaston (Luke Evans), and had *GASP* an “exclusively gay moment” at the end of the film.

Well, it looks like the homophobia isn’t just exclusive to Alabama, as Malaysian theaters are very clear they do not want to spread “gay propaganda” to minors.

Local theater chain GSC Cinemas said it will refund customers who bought tickets in advance. A Disney spokesperson told Malaysian newspaper The Star:

“The movie release date has been postponed and we are reviewing its new release date internally.”

Despite the halt, Malaysian officials say they’ve set much more progressive censorship guidelines and are now allowed to feature gay men depicted in films — as long as they turn straight by the end.

Malaysian Film Producers’ Association president Ahmad Puad Onah says the new rules reverse a ban on scenes featuring homosexuality, but there’s a catch. He told AFP:

“We are now allowed to show these scenes. As long as we portray good triumphing over evil and there is a lesson learnt in the film, such as from a gay [character] who turns into a [straight] man.”

That completely negates the purpose of more LGBT visibility in mainstream films, and would be a tragic waste of fairy dust.

Can we just say that a subtle guy-on-guy moment is FAR from the least gay thing about this film. We mean, a flaming candelabra singing showtunes? Think about it, Malaysia…
