Prince’s Ex-Wife Speaks Out On His Passing — ‘I Never Actually Saw Him Do Drugs’

Mayte Garcia reminisces about ex husband Prince.

Prince may have been dealing with a drug addiction for many years.

In her new memoir, The Most Beautiful: My Life With Prince, exclusively excerpted in People, the musician’s ex-wife Mayte Garcia describes their four-year marriage and remembers times when Prince was acting strangely, although she is also quick to say that she never personally saw him using any questionable substances.

She writes:

“I never actually saw Prince doing drugs. He didn’t want me to. I’m sure he knew what my reaction would be.”

However, there were plenty of “disturbing occasions when he told me he was ├óΓé¼╦£sick’ or had a ├óΓé¼╦£migraine,'” which now seem like hints that there was something problematic going on that she wasn’t privy to.

Mayte says as much as she reminisces:

“Looking back now and being much older I can see it was something else. [But] I never saw him do anything ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ not even take an aspirin.”

The 43-year-old also admits she was once asked to “flush some pills [that Prince had told her he’d left in his hotel room] down the toilet.” She remembers doing as he asked and admits, “I didn’t question what it was.”

Things got extremely tough for the couple in 1996 after the death of their newborn son from a rare genetic disorder called Pfeiffer syndrome. Garcia now explains that it was what caused the demise of their relationship, saying:

“I never told him about my thoughts of suicide or how close I had come to doing it. But I started to think he knew, because my Vicodin kept disappearing. I assumed he was hiding them to keep me from hurting myself. In retrospect, I don’t know what to think.”

As a final thought, the former dancer addresses her ex’s untimely death, saying:

“It makes me sad. He left behind a lot of people who loved him. But it was his time. I know he didn’t fear death.”

Garcia’s memoir will be released on April 4.
