The Power Rangers movie is morphin’ into quite the progressive reboot!
The big screen adaptation of the hit ‘90s TV show will be the first superhero blockbuster to feature an LGBTQ protagonist!
It’s revealed in the film’s second act that Becky G‘s character Trini is coming to terms with her sexual orientation.
As the titular heros get to know each other, one character assumes the Yellow Ranger is having “boyfriend problems,” but soon realizes that she might actually be having “girlfriend problems.”
Director Dean Israelite says the small moment is “pivotal” for the entire film, telling The Hollywood Reporter:
“For Trini, really she’s questioning a lot about who she is. She hasn’t fully figured it out yet. I think what’s great about that scene and what that scene propels for the rest of the movie is, ‘That’s OK.’ The movie is saying, ‘That’s OK,’ and all of the kids have to own who they are and find their tribe.”
What a great storyline for all the other confused Yellow Rangers out there!
Comic books have certainly upped their LGBT representation over the years, with high profile characters like Wonder Woman, Harley Quinn, and the OG Green Lantern coming out of the superhero/villain closet.
But when these characters are adapted to the big screen, they have all been portrayed as straight — albeit a few homoerotic lines from Ryan Reynolds in Deadpool.
That’s why we’re so excited to see a superhero whose self discovery will resonate with millions of viewers looking for a kick ass Ranger they can really relate to!
Is it weird that we’re shipping Trini and Rita Repulsa as a couple now?
