People with escalator fears — LOOK AWAY!
On Saturday, at least 18 people were left injured at a mall in Hong Kong when an escalator unexpectedly changed direction at an increased speed. So scary!
Chaos ensued when a heavily crowded escalator at the Langham Place shopping center changed from moving upwards to downwards without warning AND at a terrifyingly fast speed. Not only did shoppers scream from shock, but many lost their balance and stumbled backwards, which caused quite the pileup at the bottom of the moving steps.
One injured female shopper told the South Morning China Post:
“I was going up the escalator, and it was two times faster than normal.”
Eek. To make matters worse, the escalator is one of the longest in Hong Kong as it connects to the fourth and eighth floors of the mall.
Obviously, ambulances were called and brought those injured to local hospitals. Reportedly, one man suffered a bad head injury and was in serious condition.
Nonetheless, both a spokeswoman and the director for the mall’s property management company defend that the escalator hasn’t had any issues in the past and just passed an inspection on March 23. Huh.
Still, the shopping center’s general manager has since asked the contractor for the escalators to do a formal investigation into the accident. The GM noted:
“We are urging the Otis Elevator Company to thoroughly probe into the accident, in concerted effort with the police, the fire department and other government sectors.”
While we wait for updates on this crazzzy accident, be sure to ch-ch-check out the terrifying scene for yourself (below)!
