What an interview!
Chelsea Clinton appeared on CBS This Morning Tuesday and, boy, did she have a lot to say!
The author and adjunct professor spoke about her mother, her own political plans or lack thereof, the Russia probe, and even Ivanka Trump!
Regarding Hillary Clinton, the former First Daughter was asked about how she’s doing and if she’ll run for office again. Chelsea said:
“She’s great. I saw her this weekend…I have no idea [if she’ll run for public office again]. I don’t think so. I think right now she’s focused on her book, she’s focused thankfully on her grandchildren, she’s focused on what she can do to help support work she’s been engaged in for longer than I’ve been alive, around children, around women, around families. I’m just grateful to have more time with her now than I’ve had in a long time.”
As for what Hillary has in store for the future, the 37-year-old said:
“Well I think we’re seeing what that means right now. She’s has given a few speeches where she is talking about what she thinks needs to happen now. She’s clearly looking to encourage many of particularly the young people who are thinking about running for office, that they should keep thinking about that, and throw their hats into the ring. She is trying to figure out what she can do to help support so many of the organizations like Planned Parenthood who are standing on the frontlines to defend our fundamental rights.”
Chelsea gave her most thoughtful response when asked if she would ever consider running for office herself, saying:
“No [I’m not thinking of running for office]. But I do think it’s important that we be talking about all the different ways that it is possible to engage in the world. I think being a citizen isn’t something that just happens in an election year. I think it’ss something that is a call to action for each one of us, Gayle, every single day. And I think there are lots of ways to be involved, clearly running for public office is one of those. I think to run for public office though a few things have to be true. You have to have a clear vision of what you would do in a given job. You have to have a clear sense that you’re the best person for that job…I’m really lucky. I live in a neighborhood here in New York City where I support our city councilwoman. I support our mayor. I love our congresswoman, our senators. I clearly don’t agree with our president, but I’m definitely not the right person to run to defeat him in 2020. So right now the answer is no, but I think we all need to be asking ourselves that question periodically. And I hope that a lot of young people use the election to think, ‘wow, should I run for public office?'”
Well, she’s still super young. She has plenty of time to think about her future role in politics.
The mom of two also touched upon Russia’s possible influence on the election, but kept her answer very diplomatic:
“I think we don’t yet know the answer to anything around Russia and I think we deserve those answers.”
In a rather bold move, she was even asked why she thought her mom lost the election. She said:
“Well, clearly I worked very hard [for her to win the election]. I’m deeply biased towards my mom. For me, Charlie, I’m focused on the future. Part of what I hope to do with It’s Your World, what I hope to do through my foundation, what I hope to do with my teaching…is to help encourage all of us to be focused on what do we think our major challenges are, what can each of us do.”
As for what she wishes for Ivanka Trump, who was also going to be interviewed later on the show, Chelsea said:
“I hope her kids are doing well. I hope they’re enjoying their home in Washington.”
