We were shocked to report that Charlie Murphy died at 57 years old after a battle with leukemia.

Apparently, those who worked with the actor were just as taken back by the tragedy — because they had no idea he was even battling cancer.

Production sources on the show Power told TMZ that Charlie, who played a prison guard on the Starz drama, kept his illness extremely private and never spoke about it to anyone on set.

Family sources said Eddie Murphy‘s brother only shared his diagnosis with very close friends and family members, as he did not want his condition to define him.

But even family members who were privy to the illness were reportedly shocked when he passed away, as they weren’t aware just how dire Murphy’s situation was.

Power star 50 Cent took to Instagram to pay tribute to his deceased costar, who joined the drama for its upcoming fourth season. He shared:

R.I.P to my man Charlie Murphy. We just worked together in POWER. GOD BLESSA post shared by 50 Cent (@50cent) on Apr 12, 2017 at 10:13am PDT

A rep from Starz also released a statement in the wake of Murphy’s passing sharing:

“Starz sends our deepest condolences to Charlie’s family and friends. He joined ‘Power’ for our upcoming season, and his talent shines in every scene. We were fortunate to have worked with him.”

R.I.P., Charlie.
