The family of Aaron Hernandez is in mourning after his alleged suicide.

While their son had become a controversial figure, convicted of one murder and later acquitted of two others, he was still their kin.

So immediately following a private funeral — which was attended by a few of his friends from the NFL — the family released the following statement:

“The family of Aaron Hernandez wishes to thank the public for its thoughtful expressions of condolences. The family wishes to say goodbye to Aaron in privacy. They thank everyone in advance for affording them some measure of privacy during this difficult time. They love him, and they miss him.”

Their grief was compounded today because after the District Attorney initially withheld Hernandez’s suicide notes, final letters to his family and friends, the court finally ordered them to be released.

The fam reportedly were sent unredacted email copies Monday in time for the funeral.

We hope for their sake the notes provided some sense of closure. Though with a continued investigation into his death still to come, thanks largely to his fianc├â┬⌐e Shayanna Jenkins, we’re guessing this won’t be done for a long, long time.
