American University Investigates Racist Incident Involving Bananas Same Day First Black Student Government President Takes Office

American University investigating racist incident involving bananas.

It’s bullshit that things like this keep happening!

Administrators at American University in Washington, D.C., are looking into a racist incident that occurred Monday, where bananas marked with offensive messages were found hanging from nooses around campus.

The bananas were found the same day that Taylor Dumpson, a black female student and member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., an organization with mainly black women as members, took office as American University Student Government President.

Hateful messages on the bananas included “Harambe bait” and “AKA free.”

Dumpson happens to be the first female black student body president at the university. She released a statement that read in part:

“It is disheartening and immensely frustrating that we are still dealing with this issue after recent conversations, dialogues, and town halls surrounding race relations on campus. But this is exactly why we need to do more than just have conversations but move in a direction towards more tangible solutions to prevent incidents like these from occurring in the future.

“As the first black woman AUSG president, I implore all of us to unite in solidarity with those impacted by this situation and we must remember that “if there is no struggle, there is no progress” ├óΓé¼ΓÇ£ Frederick Douglass. We must use this time to reflect on what we value as a community and we must show those in the community that bigotry, hate, and racism cannot and will not be tolerated.”

University President Neil Kerwin also spoke out, calling the incident a “crude and racially insensitive act of bigotry.” But students seem to feel the university won’t put its money where its mouth is in order to actually stop such incidents and to find the ones responsible for it and punish them accordingly.

They took to social media to voice their concerns.

This is the second time this academic year that black women have been targeted with racially motivated incidents. In September, a sophomore named Ma’at Sargeant said a group of people opened her dorm room door and threw a rotten banana at her. Another student named Neah Gray said she opened her door to find a banana left in front of it, and later found penises drawn all over her whiteboard.

Seriously fucked up!

A community meeting is set to take place Tuesday to address the issue and people’s concerns.

We sincerely hope they can find whoever did this and hold them accountable. The university needs to let its black and minority students know that they are safe on campus.
