In her upcoming memoir A New Model: What Confidence, Beauty, and Power Really Look Like, the supermodel gets intensely intimate, sharing so pretty deep deets about her personal life.
Ashley shares the bad: her first boyfriend broke up with her because he was afraid she was “going to be as fat” as his mom, and she lost her virginity to a guy she barely knew because “he gave me compliments.”
And the good: she met her wonderful husband, cinematographer Justin Ervin, while volunteering at church, and their relationship was built on far more than just the physical — they didn’t even sleep together until their wedding night!
Sadly, the physical is what some members of Ashley’s family couldn’t see past; her interracial relationship bothered her grandparents at first. She writes:
“I never told my grandparents that the man I was bringing home was black. I naively hoped everyone would be color-blind — which is not what happened. When my grandparents met Justin, my grandmother was cordial but cold. She greeted him and immediately walked away. When it came time for them to leave, my grandparents didn’t even acknowledge him. I had never seen my loving, hardworking and wonderful grandma be so hurtful and so racist. I was in shock.”
Unfortunately, this is something all too many of us have experienced. Even in the kindest people, these backward racial divides can plague the heart. And that ignorance can only be eradicated through education.
Thankfully, Ashley’s grandmother finally got over it after Justin impressed with the simplest thing — a sweet phone call on her 60th anniversary. Ashley writes:
“He’s not a texter or an emailer; he’s a pick-up-the-phone-and-call-you ├é┬¡person, and anniversaries are a big deal to him. Afterward Grandma called my mom and said, ├óΓé¼╦£You’ll never guess who called me.’ And from then on out, she loved him.”
Sad that people have to be won over especially like that. But we credit Justin with letting his inner grace shine out rather than holding a grudge. Love that in a guy!
Ashley reveals even more in A New Model out May 9.
