In case you needed yet another example, racism is still very much alive in 2017.
Arkansas high school student Anna Hayes was met with intense backlash from her father after she recently took her friend Phillip Freeman to prom — all because Phillip is black. Ugh.
As one does, Anna and Phillip excitedly shared photos from the special night to Facebook. Anna’s father immediately texted his daughter with racist slurs and threats to disown her.
Of her strained relationship with her father, Anna told Buzzfeed News:
“He had always been openly racist around me when I was growing up in his household, but it never really occurred to me what it exactly meant to be racist, when you’re a child you look at the world completely different.”
She went on:
“He has told me that if I ever dated a black guy that I will and would be dead to him. I stood my ground for what I believe in. He has called me several horrible things before.”
Warning, these screenshots are extremely hard to read (below):
After the story went viral, Anna says the attention has been “stressful and a bit unbelievable” — but admits it’s worth it to “fight for what is right”:
“Racism against all races needs to end. We can be the change, and if you have a family member or anyone that disowns you because of who you love or associate with then forget them, people will support you through this. I know they supported me for sure.”
Have YOU experienced racism like this in your family??
