A lot has happened since Katy Perry released Prism in 2013.
In the span of nearly four years since dropping her last album, the pop singer performed at the 2015 Super Bowl, was the not-so-subtle subject of the decade’s biggest diss track, and was at the forefront of the biggest political upset in modern history.
So, it’s no surprise Perry’s upcoming fourth studio album “definitely is a change” from the breezy, high-fructose pop we’re accustomed to getting from the superstar.
The Bon Appetit singer spoke to EW about her hotly-anticipated return, which came after a much needed hiatus back to her home base in Santa Barbara, California.
It was during Perry’s West Coast retreat where she began penning the tracks for her upcoming album, the title of which is yet to be revealed. She explained:
“The energy is just totally different ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ it’s not thirsty or desperate or clingy. It’s a really beautiful kind of Zen-like feeling place. I just went there to gather myself and I started making a record in June of last year.”
In addition to the two already-released lead singles, the album will include a song titled Bigger Than Me, which was inspired by the aftermath of the election, and a fun dance song called Swish Swish.
While she considers the new album “fun and dance-y and dark and light,” Perry revealed it also shows her growth and maturity, continuing:
“I left my 20s and I’ve gone to my 30s. I’ve embraced. I’ve surrendered. I’ve healed some of my issues with my family, with my relationships. Today I’m sober but I don’t know about tomorrow! One day at a time, right? [Laughs] It’s all kind of beautiful. I built up Katy Perry and she was so fun. And I still am Katy Perry and I love her so much but, at the core, I’m Katheryn Hudson and I think that’s being revealed as I embrace who I really am.”
Wow. Sounds like Katy Kat’s ready to get personal!
Which is good news, considering the biggest question on everyone’s minds is: will this new album have a response to Bad Blood?!
“Well that’s not my question to answer ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ if it’s about me. I think [my new album is] a very empowered record. There is no one thing that’s calling out any one person.
One thing to note is: You can’t mistake kindness for weakness and don’t come for me. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. Anyone. And that’s not to any one person and don’t quote me that it is, because it’s not. It’s not about that. Honestly, when women come together and they decide to unite, this world is going to be a better place. Period end of story. But, let me say this: Everything has a reaction or a consequence so don’t forget about that, okay, honey. [Laughs] We got to keep it real, honey. This record is not about anyone else! This record is about me being seen and heard so that I can see and hear everyone else! It’s not even about me! It’s about everything that I see out there that I digest. I think there’s a healing in it for me and vulnerability. If people want to connect and be healed and feel vulnerable and feel empowered and strong, God bless and here it is.”
Okay, so there’s not ONE person she’s calling out on this album. That said, her response is TOTALLY hinting at a Bad Blood 2 — and we need to hear it NOW!
