Things Are STILL Tense AF Between Fifty Shades Of Grey Director Sam Taylor-Johnson & Author E.L. James…

sam taylor johnson talks el james feud

We doubt Sam Taylor-Johnson will ever work with Fifty Shades Of Grey author E.L. James again.

In case you forgot, the British filmmaker helmed the first movie in the film franchise based off of James’ best selling romance novel. However, Miz Taylor-Johnson was not brought back to direct Fifty Shades Darker — and there is a reason for that!

Apparently, Sam and E.L. (whose real name is Erika Mitchell (and whose FIRST pen name was Snowqueens Icedragon) butted heads quite a bit while making the flick that launched Dakota Johnson‘s career. Ooh, go on!

The director dished to The Hollywood Reporter:

“Two different creative visions. Her vision versus mine, and they were polar opposite. Every scene was fought over. It was tough. It was like wading uphill through sticky tar. Her thing was, ‘This is what the fans expect.’ I’d be like, ‘Well, let’s try and hit those marks but create a new universe at the same time.'”

Hmmm, very inneresting. She continued:

“There was a tentative plan that I would be involved with the following two. [But the studio] wanted to see how the first one went before any discussion. It went well in terms of box office. But less well with my relationship with Erika.”

Of course, this candid comment isn’t necessarily shocking as reports of friction on set leaked back in 2014. The duo famously locked horns over the last line of the film after Dakota’s character, Anastasia Steele, finally allows herself to be really whipped by Jamie Dornan‘s Christian Grey — and then leaves him.

Sam and screenwriter Kelly Marcel wanted Anastasia to say the safe word “Red” to tell Christian not to follow her, using his own terms against him. Nonetheless, for some reason, James was insistent that the protagonist could only say “Stop” in the scene. Just one of many rumored fights. Oof.

And it seems as though parting ways with the franchise was the best thing for Aaron Taylor-Johnson‘s husband. During a sit down with the U.K.’s Sunday Times earlier this week, the Nowhere Boy director explained:

“With the benefit of hindsight would I go through it again? Of course I wouldn’t. I’d be mad. It was a struggle and there were lots of onset t├â┬¬te-├â┬á-t├â┬¬tes, with me trying to bat it into the [right] place. I like everyone ├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥ and I get really confused when they don’t like me. I was so confused by E.L. James. I don’t understand when I can’t navigate a person, when there’s no synergy.”

Well, well! Regardless, things are going well for Sam in her post-Fifty Shades life as she’s busy with her new Netflix show, titled Gypsy.

Go get ’em, girl!
