On field reporting can be a messy job.
That proved to be the case when Wendy Burch covered the ironman competition in Hermosa Beach — where she got a face full of vomit!
The KTLA Morning News reporter spent her Fourth of July in what she thought would be covering a normal triathlon sort of event, but arrived at the beach to see nothing but “beer-bombs bursting in air.”
Yes, in its longstanding 43-year tradition, athletes in the Hermosa Beach Ironman have to run a mile, paddle a mile, and then chug a six pack of beer.
That last step was the downfall for Burch, who picked a “spirited competitor” to interview without knowing he was literally asking for someone to barf on him!
In a Facebook post recounting the pukey tale, she explained:
“My hope was that his broad├óΓé¼┬ª ah, erh├óΓé¼┬ª shoulders, could shield our morning viewers from the ups├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥and from what wasn’t staying down├óΓé¼ΓÇ¥in this competition. What I didn’t notice until later, is that he had a bullseye drawn on his back with the words “puke here” written in magic marker. And wouldn’t you know it? Someone took him up on the offer right during the middle of my live report, much to the chagrin, of me, our anchors and anyone in Southern California who may have been eating breakfast at that very moment.”
Yup, Burch would soon be the subject of YouTube gold, under the search title “reporter vomited on.”
The worst part is, the reporter had no idea the camera cut back to the anchors after she got doused with puke chucks, and kept on interviewing drunken people while, according to her post, “sudsy substances flew in in the air and landed in my hair.” Dedication!
