Nyle DiMarco is rightfully outraged.
On Wednesday, the deaf Dancing With The Stars alum took to Twitter to express his anger after learning that a hearing impaired man from Oklahoma City was tased and fatally shot by police this week. How awful.
In response to the very upsetting report, the America’s Next Top Model vet wrote:
I have no words at all.
The neighbors SCREAMED to tell the police that he is Deaf.
Police still shoots.
What a tragic situation. In case you were unaware, 35-year-old Magdiel Sanchez was pronounced dead in front of his residence after two cops confronted him over a reported hit-and-run incident. The authorities have since released a statement detailing their side of the troubling story.
The Oklahoma City Police Department explained:
“Sanchez had a pipe in his right hand ├óΓé¼┬ª Lieutenant Matthew Lindsey and Sgt. Christopher Barnes gave verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon. The suspect continued to advance towards Sgt. Barnes. Lt. Lindsey then deployed his Taser. At the same time Sgt. Barnes discharged his firearm toward the suspect.”
However, it appears the two officers were well aware that Sanchez was deaf as Captain Bo Mathews confirmed during a press conference that witnesses did yell, “he can’t hear you” prior to the shooting. To make matters worse, it was Magdiel’s father who allegedly drove the vehicle involved in the hit-and-run.
Per Capt. Mathews, neither Lindsey nor Barnes had a body camera on during the incident. When asked why Barnes chose to discharge his weapon, rather than use a taser, the captain said it was possible that the sergeant wasn’t equipped with a taser. He continued:
“In those situations, very volatile situations, you have a weapon out, you can get what they call tunnel vision, or you can really lock into just the person that has the weapon that’d be the threat against you. I don’t know exactly what the officers were thinking at that point.”
Barnes has since been placed on administrative leave as an investigation is pending. Our thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragedy.
