Nick Carter has offered up his response to Melissa Schuman‘s shocking rape accusation.
As we previously reported, the former Dream member claimed in a blog post that the Backstreet Boys vet sexually assaulted her when she was 18 and he was 22. In the graphic post from earlier this month, the former teen pop star went in to detail about the assault and also revealed that she was initially silenced after she tried to come forward about the incident.
Nonetheless, it appears the boy bander remembers their time together differently. In response to Melissa’s troubling claims, the industry vet offered the following statement to People:
“I am shocked and saddened by Ms. Schuman’s accusations. Melissa never expressed to me while we were together or at any time since that anything we did was not consensual. We went on to record a song and perform together, and I was always respectful and supportive of Melissa both personally and professionally.”
This claim is DRASTICALLY different to Schuman’s account. Per Melissa’s written piece, Nick took her to a bathroom and began performing oral sex on her, even though she objected to the act. Allegedly, Melissa told Carter she was a virgin and that she wanted to wait until marriage, but Nick took her to his bedroom and “climbed on top of” her.
Despite Melissa’s damning blog post, Nick is vehement that this is the “first [he’s] hearing about these accusations.” He continued:
“This is the first that I am hearing about these accusations, nearly two decades later. It is contrary to my nature and everything I hold dear to intentionally cause someone discomfort or harm.”
Although Nick hasn’t taken responsibility for the alleged assault, Melissa is certainly grateful for the love and support she’s received since coming forward with her claim. On Monday, Melissa took to Twitter and wrote:
I just want to thank everyone for the outpouring of love and support. Thank you for bearing witness to my story. Thank you for providing me a safe place to be open and vulnerable. I love you all. Thank you for aiding me in the healing that I so desperately needed. I am free now.
