We are HERE for this decision.
On Tuesday, it was revealed that Hoda Kotb has been tapped to permanently fill the spot left vacant by Matt Lauer‘s scandalous ousting. As you surely know, the newsman was fired from NBC News after it was revealed that he demonstrated “inappropriate sexual behavior” in the workplace.
Following Lauer’s shocking scandal and subsequent firing, NBC placed the seasoned Today vet on camera next to co-anchor with Savannah Guthrie as a temporary fix. Well, it seems the on screen chemistry between Guthrie and Kotb tested well, because Hoda is now Savannah’s co-anchor FULL TIME.
On her deep bond with Savannah, the 53-year-old told People:
“When you click with someone, man, woman, it doesn’t matter. If it works, it works. We’re sort of like sisters, and everybody wants a sister.”
Awwwwww. Understandably, as the two TV personalities were close friends with Matt, the Today ladies have been leaning on each other during this hard time.
In regards to how they handle Lauer’s controversy, Guthrie noted:
“That morning was so hard, but Hoda and I were in it together. We are family, and families do go through hard times, and when that happens in good families, you just get closer.”
Well said. It also helps that Hoda is such a delight to be around, as Savannah added:
“It was such a shock to wake up one day and not have Matt, but it was the most natural and comforting thing in the world to have Hoda right there. No one wanted that to stop.”
Hear! Hear! Ironically, while covering for Lauer, Hoda never thought about permanently taking the spot as she simply wanted to make sure the show went on. The single mom relayed:
“We were just trying to make it through those days together. Sometimes when you go through something with someone, you see something special. I think that’s what happened. I didn’t think about whether it would be me.”
AH-Mazing. And NBC seems pretty jazzed about their decision, as NBC News Group chairman Andy Lack shared:
“We’re very fortunate to have someone like Hoda who brings immense talent and tremendous positive energy, and then on top of that happens to have wonderful chemistry with Savannah. It makes this a decision that everyone can embrace and feel terrific about.”
Apparently, the executives at the network offered Hoda the job JUST before the holidays — talk about a Christmas bonus, right??
However, for the time being, Kotb will continue hosting the show’s 10 a.m. hour alongside Kathie Lee Gifford. Oh, and if you are wondering what Matt’s up to these days, Savannah concluded:
“We know he’s working on his family, we know that for sure. Of course our hearts go out to the brave women who have told their stories. What we are experiencing and processing now is how to honor and remain a true friend to someone even in spite of learning things that are deeply disturbing. And we are trying to navigate that path with integrity.”
We guess you gotta do what you gotta do.
Congrats, Hoda!! You SO deserve this!!
